Early Life

Rayla was abandoned as an infant, left upon the steps of the temple the House of Sorrows used as their hideout and base of operations. Like her, many of members of the infamous assassin's guild were left there, though some were recruited as well. However, despite their shared lots in life, Rayla was often avoided. As a child she had heard several of the older members mention that there was something 'wrong' about her; that they were able to sense. It often left her moody and depressed, thinking they didn't want her around.

Despite her uncertainty, she was trained as all the others were. She displayed a natural talent for their arts and advanced far quicker than those her own age and even some that had been training for years before she had even arrived. In her teens, she began to display the ability to manipulate the arcane. Though no sorcerer, her power over ice and poison proved to be a substantial supplement to her already impressive skills. It did not make her any friends. If anything, those she considered to be friends began to turn their backs on her.

That was also when the nightmares began.

Her sleep was plagued with dreams of a horrible, monstrous serpent with glowing eyes, shrouded in a mist. It spoke words she didn't understand, but still managed to chill her blood. Eventually she brought the dreams to the attention of her teacher and the guild master, a man named Caldan. Though his knowledge of such things was limited, he knew a mystic who could help her.

Daughter of the Serpent

At the far reaches of the Dark Fen, Rayla met with an old witch who had been expecting her arrival. Rayla told her the story of her life as she knew it, putting a lot of time into describing the dreams she had been having. The woman simply nodded, telling her she could help the girl understand. She insisted Rayla spend the night there, promising all would be clear in the morning. The nightmare came again, but this time Rayla was not alone. As she stared up at the serpent that towered over the nearest mountain, the old woman was standing in front of her. As the serpent spoke in its unknown language, the woman spoke the words in translation.

The colossal being that had haunted her for years was none other than Yuan'gal, the Devourer, the Serpent God. He told her her name was Sspiria and she was his youngest child. She didn't wish to believe him at first, shouting and cursing him to leave her alone, but he did not rage nor chide her. He was far more understanding than she expected a god to be. His words were wise and helped her to understand why she always felt different from those around her and why they felt she was not normal. It explained most everything about her.

When she asked about her mother, he became enraged. He claimed his other children, her brothers and sisters, killed her during their attempt to overthrow him. He only managed to get Rayla to safety before his physical form was destroyed. As the night came to an end, she could only hear the unnerving laughing break through the haze.

When Rayla woke up, she was alone in the cottage and the old woman was nowhere to be found.

The Present

After her experience at the witch's cottage, Rayla found herself unable to return to the House of Sorrows. She return briefly in the dead of night to leave a message and then vanished. Years passed and the people she once knew died while she continued to remain. She traveled as much as she could, attempting to find those she would consider her siblings. As it turned out, the few she managed to locate turned out to be less than welcoming of her, going so far as to try and kill her. She never managed to figure out their hatred for her.

Rayla eventually arrived in the Kingdom of Dranglor. In the midst of a terrible civil war, Rayla found herself caught in the middle. Taking the time to save a group of refugees attempting to flee, she befriended a young couple who told her the story of the Mad King, a man who overthrew the rightful heir and was attempting to seize control. Her skills and bravery impressed them and they asked for her help. She was loath to get involved, but it seemed the only solution to even getting out of the city.

Rayla proceeded to infiltrate the castle, subdue several of the guards and finally confront the Mad King. Much to her surprise, he turned out to be her eldest brother, first child of the Serpent. Rayla managed to overcome his incredible fighting ability and put an end to both him and his war. It was only then the couple she had befriended revealed themselves to be the rightful King and Queen. They thank her and, as reward, offered her a permanent place at their side.

Rayla was given the title of Queen's Shadow, eliminating threats before they become threats and extending her reach to where she could not otherwise go. She served through three generations and three different Queens before leaving the realm to find her purpose and search for her destiny.
