Zorah Castinan
Captian of the Ominous Wind
History
While many people looked at the world and accepted the lot they had been handed, whether by birth or random chance, not all looked upon what they had and were satisfied. Zorah grew up the middle child of a low ranked servant to a noble house. Those her family served were widely known to be one of worst; a privilaged family with a long history that considered themselves above the law. Cruel, but clever, they were a family even the local monarchy was hesitant to anger and even more hesitant to put them in their place.
Growing up, Zorah watched as her parents, her siblings and the other servants and workers get practically worked to death. The family was quick to use the whip for discipline and Zorah had been on the recieving end of leather lashes more than once. She dreamed of a better life, one where she believed people were treated based upon the quality of their character and less about what family they were born into. It was a fleeting fantasy that was shattered when her mother was raped by the son of the noble family and then executed, accused of seduction and attempts to soil the noble house. She had begged her father to stand up and try to fight back, but he was a shell of a man by then: beaten, broken, and without hope. She had no choice but to carry on in his stead.
When her older brother Drake came of age, he managed to get out of their servitude by joining the royal Navy, a military force mighty enough to level small cities from the safety of the shoreline. Even this noble family dared not try to fight to get him back. He attempted to convince Zorah to join him, but she refused. She said they had to get justice for their mother, but Drake brushed the idea off. Calling him a traitor, she spat on the ground at his feet. She would have to do it alone.
Despite her desire, the ability to attain her goal was lacking. It wasn't until Zorah met a young woman from another noble house that her life began to change. Her name was Amanda Illyard and despite being a noble herself, did not enjoy it. She told Zorah of how little freedom she had, wanting nothing more than to go out on her own and see what the outside world had to offer. Her life was a cage, if a gilded cage. Amanda introduced Zorah to her house's captain of the guard who, upon request from Amanda, agreed to train Zorah in secret. She had a natural talent and over the course of several years became a master in both blade and gun.
Shortly thereafter Amanda mentioned to Zorah her families intent to marry her to the son of the noble house that owned Zorah's family. Like Zorah, she was disgusted and wanted nothing of the sort. They decided it was time to persue their dreams, despite what everyone else wanted or intended. The day before the wedding, Zorah and Amanda took up arms and fought their way out of their old lives. Zorah made a point to take on the noble son, now the head of the house, on her own. He was famed swordmans on his own, and bested him, much to his surprise. Even with his dying breaths, he could not admit his own guilt. With her family freed and her mother avenged, Zorah and Amanda made their retreat, commendeering the Illyard family's best galleon in dry dock.
Over the next few years, the two sailed from port to port, island to island, exploring and gathering what they could. Zorah's talks of changing ones lot in life, righting the wrongs of the nobility and true freedom, resonated to a many people. It didn't take too long until Zorah had built a crew of her own; each one of hardened by their pasts, but found in Zorah a leader, a visionary, and someone that was worth following into the pits of hell with confidence she would lead them back out again.
Not everyone agreed though. Her brother Drake had become an officer in the royal Navy and condemed the actions she took, vowing to capture her himself. Their crews engaged in battle multiple times, but each time Zorah managed to escape. Despite these defeats, Drake could always bee seen smiling whenever she did.
Despite making enemies of Navy soliders as well as rival pirate crews, she finds ways to make just as many friends. Her charismatic nature draws people in, but she is not shy about removing a person's limb should she feel they wronged her. Her crew are her family and will do whatever it takes to help her family; lie, cheat, steal or kill.
